NIMASA DRIVES NIGERIA’S MARITIME DECARBONIZATION EFFORTS

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing regulatory leadership and technical coordination for the development of Nigeria’s National Maritime Decarbonisation Action Plan.
This pledge was made by the Director-General of NIMASA, Dayo Mobereola, during a National Stakeholders’ Workshop aimed at advancing the formulation of the strategic plan.
The workshop marked a critical milestone in aligning Nigeria’s maritime sector with the Federal Government’s blue economy and climate change objectives. Represented by the Agency’s Executive Director, Operations, Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, Mobereola emphasized the importance of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) GreenVoyage2050 Project, a technical cooperation initiative designed to support developing countries in implementing the IMO’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy.
The IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project is a key component of the global effort to reduce maritime emissions and mitigate the impact of climate change. By participating in this initiative, Nigeria aims to develop a comprehensive National Maritime Decarbonisation Action Plan that addresses the country’s unique maritime challenges and opportunities. NIMASA’s leadership is crucial in driving this process, bringing together stakeholders from across the maritime industry to contribute to the plan’s development.
The National Stakeholders’ Workshop provided a platform for experts to share insights and recommendations on Nigeria’s decarbonisation journey. Participants discussed strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable shipping practices, and enhancing the country’s maritime competitiveness. The workshop also highlighted NIMASA’s role in coordinating stakeholder engagement and ensuring that Nigeria’s maritime sector aligns with global best practices.
NIMASA’s commitment to decarbonisation reflects the agency’s broader mandate to promote sustainable maritime development in Nigeria. By prioritizing decarbonisation, the agency is positioning the country’s maritime industry for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future. The development of the National Maritime Decarbonisation Action Plan is a key step towards achieving this vision.
