The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Imo State Chapter, on April 11, 2026, successfully conducted its State Congress at the Kanu Nwankwo Sports Centre, Owerri, with party leaders, stakeholders, and members in attendance from across the state.
In line with the provisions of the party’s constitution and the laws guiding political party administration, the congress resulted in the return of the existing state executives unopposed. The outcome represented a unanimous endorsement and total affirmation of the leadership by party leaders, stakeholders, and members.
The congress was presided over by the Chairman of the Congress Committee, Hon. Nkem Ukandu, and assisted by the Local Organising Committee chaired by Hon. Chief Chime Nzeribe, with Hon. Chinemerem Madu serving as Secretary, alongside other committee members. The process was conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and orderly manner, earning commendation from participants.
At the end of the exercise, Prof. James Okoroma was returned as State Chairman, Hon. Damian Ezeagu as Deputy State Chairman, and Barr. Gregory Ihejirika as State Secretary, along with other members of the State Executive Committee who were reaffirmed in their respective offices.
The congress adopted a harmonised consensus arrangement, which reflected unity, mutual trust, and collective resolve among party stakeholders. Delegates and members present expressed satisfaction with the process, describing it as credible, inclusive, and a true reflection of the will of the party.
The event attracted prominent Imo leaders and political figures, including His Excellency Chief Dr. Achike Udenwa, former Governor of Imo State; His Excellency Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, former Governor of Imo State; His Excellency Engr. Gerald Irona, former Deputy Governor of Imo State; and Sir Bon Unachukwu, National Vice Chairman (South East) of the party.
In his remarks, Chief Dr. Achike Udenwa commended the peaceful conduct of the congress and the unity displayed by party members. He described the unopposed return of the executives as a clear sign of confidence in their leadership and urged them to continue strengthening the party’s foundation across the state.
Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, in his address, praised the transparent and orderly nature of the process, noting that the consensus approach adopted by the party demonstrated maturity and discipline. He called on members to remain united and committed to building a strong and credible political platform capable of delivering good governance.
Engr. Gerald Irona also lauded the conduct of the congress, emphasizing the importance of unity and internal cohesion. He encouraged the returned executives to sustain their efforts in expanding the party’s reach and maintaining close engagement with grassroots members.
Similarly, Sir Bon Unachukwu commended the leadership and members of the party in Imo State for conducting a successful congress in line with constitutional provisions. He reaffirmed the support of the national leadership and urged the state executives to continue working diligently to position the party for future political success.
Responding on behalf of the State Executive Committee, the State Chairman, Prof. James Okoroma, expressed deep appreciation to party leaders, stakeholders, and members for the overwhelming vote of confidence demonstrated through their unanimous endorsement.
He described the affirmation as both an honour and a responsibility, assuring members that the leadership would rededicate itself to the growth and stability of the party. He pledged that the executives would continue to uphold transparency, fairness, and internal democracy in all party affairs.
