The Customs Area Controller, Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, has visited a traditional ruler and key security stakeholders in Ogun State to strengthen cooperation in combating drug trafficking and cross-border crimes.
The Aliyu’s engagements included meetings with the Ogun State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, and the Alake of Egbaland.
He disclosed during the engagement that the unit had recorded significant seizures of Cannabis Indica, with over 60% of the over two tonnes intercepted traced to the Ogun corridor.
The Customs Comptroller emphasized that coordinated efforts are essential in tackling organized criminal networks, highlighting the tragic loss of a Customs officer during an anti-smuggling operation. He reaffirmed the unit’s determination to enforce the zero-tolerance policy against illicit imports.
NDLEA Commander Tijjani Rabe praised the Customs Service for its enforcement activities and welcomed the strengthened collaboration. He noted that the command focuses on enforcement and preventive measures, engaging young people through sensitization programs to discourage drug abuse.
Aliyu also met with the Ogun State Police Command, emphasizing the longstanding partnership between Customs and the police in maintaining national security. The visits aimed to reinforce operational ties and curb the spread of narcotics and other illegal goods.
The Alake of Egbaland, Abiodun Lafiyan, commended the efforts of the Customs Service and other security agencies in combating drug trafficking and cross-border crimes. He assured the traditional ruler of the commitment to continue working together to ensure the safety and security of the community.
The visits are part of efforts to enhance inter-agency collaboration and information sharing to tackle the growing threat of drug trafficking and other forms of smuggling in Ogun State and beyond. The Customs Service has intensified its anti-smuggling operations, leveraging intelligence and technology to intercept illicit goods and apprehend suspects.
The Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A covers several states, including Ogun, Lagos, and parts of Oyo and Osun. The zone is a key entry point for illicit goods, making it a critical area for anti-smuggling operations.
The Customs Service has called on the public to support its efforts to combat drug trafficking and other forms of smuggling, urging citizens to report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
