Information Technology expert and Assistant Secretary of the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS), Lagos State Chapter, Dr. Peace Nkire, has cautioned Nigerian youths that every wrong information they post online leaves a permanent digital footprint that can destroy their reputation in future.<\/p>\n
Dr. Nkire gave the warning in an exclusive interview with News Emperor Online during the 9th Convocation and Research Conference of Highstone Global University, Texas, USA.<\/p>\n
The IT expert and instructor, who recently authored a book titled _\u201cAI & The 21st Century Mom\u201d_, described Artificial Intelligence as the 5th generation computer technology that mimics human characteristics and can perform millions of tasks in split seconds.<\/p>\n
According to her, in today’s digital world which has become a global village, there are three kinds of citizens: the Digital Aliens, the Digital Immigrants and the Digital Natives or Millennials.<\/p>\n
The Academic, who hails from Akwa Ibom State and is married to Barr. Damian Nkire, a legal practitioner, said she attended St. Mary’s Science College, Ediene Abak, a pure science school, before proceeding to Lagos State University (LASU). After LASU, she joined the Professional Education Management International (NIPEM) and later Highstone Global University, where she bagged her Master’s in Educational Planning and Administration. She also had several ICT trainings with New Horizon and holds many IT certifications. She is currently running her PhD at Highstone Global University.<\/p>\n
Dr. Nkire, who is the Student Coordinator of the Nigerian Computer Society, Lagos Chapter, and a Board Member of the Schools Computer Club Initiative (SCCI) founded by Dr. Adesina Adewale \u2014 Chairman of NCS Lagos Chapter \u2014 said the Society is creating awareness to keep students abreast of recent IT developments.<\/p>\n
“We have a lot to offer in technology-related areas. We are creating awareness because there are initiatives that youths can join to foster their interest in IT,” she said.<\/p>\n
She disclosed that NCS is anchoring a competition called IT CHAMPS (Champions) for upper primary and junior and senior secondary school students to encourage them to go into IT and proffer solutions to societal problems through innovation.<\/p>\n
For higher institution students, she said there are competitions like the Don Etiebet Robotic Prize and the Salako Marven Prize Foundation instituted by Dr. Salako, a Fellow of NCS, to reward innovative ideas.<\/p>\n
“If you come up with any innovative robotic solution, you apply. There are Board Members, panels and judges that will scrutinize it. They look at the solution your project can provide to society. They give prizes and grants and can even help you establish your business so you can grow, train others and solve societal problems,” she explained.<\/p>\n
On IT career paths, Dr. Nkire said with the unbundling of Computer Science, students should no longer study Computer Science generally but specialize in areas such as Graphics, Website Development, Robotics, Internet of Everything, Coding, Blockchain Engineering, Cyber Security and Data Privacy.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the HGU convocation, she commended Prof. Maurice Azubuike Odiete, President of NIPEM and partner of Highstone Global University in Nigeria, for his assiduous and undaunted efforts in bringing the university to Nigeria, teaming up with seasoned professors and breaking barriers. She noted that NIPEM, which mostly offers health and other management programmes, is a subsidiary of Highstone Global University and is doing well alongside Highstone Business School.<\/p>\n
On life in the digital global village, Dr. Nkire said: “I always tell my audience that I see citizens in three major categories \u2014 Digital Aliens, Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives. Those of us born before the millennial age are Digital Immigrants because we just moved into the digital age. The Digital Natives are those born into it.”<\/p>\n
Those who have nothing to do with digital devices, she said, are Analogs, also called Technophobes, who become afraid or irritated whenever they see any digital device and will soon become obsolete. The Natives, on the other hand, are at home in the digital world.<\/p>\n
Her advice to them: “They should use it positively. The main motive of computing is to make jobs easier, faster and simpler for humans. We shouldn’t use it against ourselves.”<\/p>\n
On morality and the negative impact of social media, Dr. Nkire said parents and educators must control the screen time of children and scrutinize what they do using screen monitoring software.<\/p>\n
This, she said, is why she wrote her new book _\u201cAI & The 21st Century Mom\u201d_ \u2014 to enlighten 21st century mothers on how to manage their children with electronic devices.<\/p>\n
She reminded youths that Nigeria enacted the Data Privacy and Protection Act in 2022 to checkmate criminal and inordinate digital activities, adding that ignorance is not an excuse.<\/p>\n
“There is what is called Digital Footprint. These children don’t know that whatever they post will remain there for decades at the Data Centre. Tomorrow when they want to travel out of the country or apply for jobs, their employers may stumble on it and it will truncate their good plans and tarnish their reputation. They should be careful and mindful of whatever they are sending out in the digital space,” she warned.<\/p>\n
She also cautioned against exposing private information such as full names, house addresses and real-time locations online, because they are interacting with strangers, and urged youths to embrace social and emotional learning to manage themselves online.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
