Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, Tin Can Island Port Command, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a massive shipment of Cannabis Indica valued at \u20a616.6 billion, dealing another blow to transnational drug trafficking networks targeting Nigerian seaports.<\/p>\n
The 4,173.5kg consignment was concealed inside a used Ford bus and a Mercedes-Benz C300 vehicle packed in a 40-foot container shipped from Canada. <\/p>\n
Addressing journalists during the inspection and handover at the Tin Can Island Command, the Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Island Port Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, said the seizure was as the result of intelligence sharing and coordinated surveillance between Customs and NDLEA officers.<\/p>\n
According to Comptroller Onyeka, the container marked HAMU 247034\/8 was flagged by the Enforcement Unit after intelligence linked it to suspicious activity. A detailed physical examination uncovered 8,347 packages of Cannabis Indica hidden within the imported vehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis seizure is another indication that drug trafficking syndicates are becoming more desperate and sophisticated in their methods,\u201d Onyeka said. <\/p>\n
\u201cJust two weeks ago, we recorded a similar seizure involving 4,729 kilogrammes of cannabis. The recurrence shows that criminal elements remain determined to compromise the nation\u2019s ports and flood the country with dangerous substances.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stressed that the Command would continue to strengthen cargo profiling, surveillance, and intelligence-driven enforcement to frustrate traffickers operating through the maritime corridor. <\/p>\n
The Service, he added, is deploying advanced risk assessment strategies and closer inter-agency collaboration to detect suspicious shipments before they enter the domestic market.<\/p>\n
Onyeka warned that anyone found collaborating with criminal syndicates, including insiders within the port environment, would face the full weight of the law. <\/p>\n
Beyond the economic implications, he said, the illicit trade poses a serious threat to national security and the wellbeing of Nigerian youth, as substance abuse continues to fuel crime and social instability across the country.<\/p>\n
The CAC commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for supporting stronger inter-agency cooperation, and the leadership of the NDLEA under Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) for sustaining intelligence partnerships in the anti-drug campaign.<\/p>\n
Receiving the seized exhibits, NDLEA Director of Seaport Operations, Ibinabo Archie-Abia, disclosed that the container had been under close monitoring for months before its arrival in Lagos.<\/p>\n
