Former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha has firmly confirmed that he is staying with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), even as his ally and former presidential candidate Peter Obi announced a move to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The development signals another shift in the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s opposition politics as the 2027 elections draw closer. While both leaders share a vision for a “New Nigeria,” they now appear set to pursue it on separate platforms.

In a Facebook statement released days after Obi’s defection on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Ihedioha struck a measured tone. He acknowledged the split while reaffirming his commitment to the coalition he helped build.

“Over the last one year, we have consciously and consistently worked to build a coalition of well-meaning Nigerians under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” he wrote. “Our purpose has been clear: to deliver good governance to the people of Nigeria and to build a nation that is accountable, inclusive, and prosperous.”

In what should be seen as parting of ways, not a falling out,
Ihedioha disclosed that Obi, whom he referred to as “my brother,” had chosen to “move to the NDC in pursuit of his political aspirations.” While noting that he “would have preferred that this ambition was pursued within the ADC,” Ihedioha was quick to add that “in a democracy, every leader has the right to make political choices guided by conviction. I respect his decision and wish him well.”

He emphasized that the underlying goal remains unchanged: “We share a common aspiration for a better Nigeria, one that works for all and respects our diversity. This remains our collective goal, one that transcends political platforms.”

Staying the course in ADC, after “due consultation and reflection over the past 72 hours,” Ihedioha said he has “chosen to remain in the African Democratic Congress at this time.” He described it as a deliberate decision, stating, “I take deliberate political steps, and for now, I find no justification to turn my back on the ADC.”

As a “foundational member of the ADC coalition,” he stressed that he is “fully conversant with the detailed and painstaking efforts that have brought us to where we are today. These efforts have been built on sacrifice, strategic alignment, and a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.”

Ihedioha ended on a note of continuity rather than division: “We will continue to work towards the shared vision of a New Nigeria, same OBJECTIVES, different PLATFORMS.”

Looking ahead and what it means for 2027, he said the development underscores the fluidity of opposition politics as 2027 approaches. Obi’s move to the NDC provides a new platform for his presidential bid, while Ihedioha’s decision to remain in the ADC positions him as a stabilizing figure within the coalition structure.

Both men continue to advocate for the same broad reform agenda. However, the divergence in platform could reshape alliance-building in the Southeast and beyond, and may test the ADC’s ability to consolidate support without one of its most prominent voices.

For now, Ihedioha appears to be betting on institutional loyalty and coalition-building over platform-switching. Whether that bet holds as the 2027 race intensifies will be one of the key subplots to watch.

©

As the political winds shift and party members move from one party to another, political realignment ahead of 2027 is taking a new turn.
