The Customs Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone \u2018A\u2019, Ikeja, Lagos, Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, has vowed that he and his officers will remain resolute in confronting smugglers within the Western jurisdiction.<\/p>\n
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, Aliyu said the command is fully prepared to give smugglers \u201cthe fight of their lives\u201d as part of its sustained anti-smuggling operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, once again we are here to provide insight into our ongoing fight against smugglers or otherwise call these saboteurs against the Southwest part of Nigeria. The Federal Operations Unit, Zone \u2018A\u2019 remains calm and focused on safeguarding…\u201d Aliyu stated.<\/p>\n
The Comptroller emphasized that the unit\u2019s operations are aimed at protecting the economy from the activities of economic saboteurs who continue to undermine government revenue and national security through illegal imports and drug trafficking.<\/p>\n
Aliyu\u2019s declaration comes on the heels of an eight-week enforcement drive that saw the unit seize contraband worth over \u20a65.5 billion, including 8,794 bags of foreign rice, 22 used vehicles, 328 bales of second-hand clothing, and 31,705 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS.<\/p>\n
The operation also led to the interception of 6.35kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of \u20a62.35 billion, concealed in a Toyota Highlander and smuggled by a 71-year-old suspect along the Lagos-Abidjan corridor. The suspect has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for prosecution.<\/p>\n
Under a special operation codenamed \u201cOperation Hawk,\u201d the unit further intercepted 3,340 parcels of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as \u201cGhanaian loud,\u201d weighing 1,540kg, alongside four cylinders of mercury, a highly hazardous substance regulated under international conventions.<\/p>\n
Aliyu noted that the command recorded 473 foiled smuggling attempts within the period and recovered \u20a697.7 million through Demand Notices issued on under-declared consignments.<\/p>\n
He reaffirmed that the unit will continue to leverage intelligence-driven operations, geospatial intelligence, drone surveillance, and real-time tracking to strengthen border security and curb revenue leakages.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur focus is to break the supply chain and reduce the impact of these criminal activities on society,\u201d Aliyu said, warning that drug trafficking remains a major threat to the lives of young people and the stability of communities.<\/p>\n
