The academic milestone, described as a sign of his commitment to knowledge-driven leadership, marks a significant achievement for the maritime administrator.

The conferment took place during the university’s 8th combined convocation ceremony, which also commemorated the institution’s 25th anniversary. The event was graced by dignitaries from within and outside the country.

Speaking on what the convocation meant to him, Dr. Akutah explained that the ceremony marked the culmination of a journey that began seven years ago. Although he had completed his degree requirements in 2024, he had to wait for the convocation day.

He added that his pursuit of a Ph.D. was inspired by his desire to teach and impart meaningful knowledge. “As a teacher of International Criminal Law, I have trained lawyers, prosecutors, and judges in different jurisdictions around the world. Pursuing a Ph.D. is just a way forward for me towards the journey of what I love,” he said.

Akutah further emphasised the necessity of continuous education. “It is very important for everyone because as long as you don’t stop living, you have to continue learning. So, for someone who wants to prepare himself for tomorrow’s leadership, you have to continue to educate yourself,” he added.

He assured that the academic laurel would bear on his job and challenged other public office holders and professionals alike to realise that leadership is most effective when continually refined by learning, and that the pursuit of knowledge remains a lifelong exercise.

Dismisses Political Distraction Rumours

In another development, the NSC boss has dismissed rumours that his political ambition was interfering with his job at the Council, insisting that he remains focused and committed to his mandate as the CEO of the NSC, being Nigeria’s Economic Regulator of the port industry.

Akutah, who made the clarification at a recent public event in Lagos, described the speculations as unfounded and a misrepresentation of his priorities, stressing that his focus remains firmly on the discharge of his statutory responsibilities under the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.

“While public officials are often subject to speculation regarding political intentions, such narratives should not be allowed to overshadow institutional work or be used to undermine regulatory actions taken in good faith and in line with the law,” he said.

He maintained that all decisions taken under his leadership have been guided strictly by legal provisions, stakeholder consultations, and the broader objective of maintaining balance within the maritime economy, rather than any personal or political considerations.

“The Council’s priority remains the protection of national trade interests, fair regulation of the port economy, and ensuring stability across the shipping and logistics sector,” Akutah added.

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, Dr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, MON, has been conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D., Degree in International Criminal Cooperation by Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
