And it also reduces the cost of doing businesses in our ports.
What you are seeing today, speaks exactly to that. That containers that are laying on the vessels are brought down immediately and are taken through the green channel, where examination would be done.”

The CGG continued:
“This is not what we used to have. It used to be some exhuburance before you get into examination bay. See, what happened today because it is the trust that our investors are having in us and the confidence that we also have in them.
On whether there will be increase in revenue generation, the CGC assured that “automatically, once we do that, there will be increase in revenue generation, ” he promised.

Speaking further about the impact of the green channel to the Nigeria customs, the customs boss said, “basically, if you are looking at the green pictures, in the first place, we are looking at reducing the cost of doing businesses and the cost of competitiveness and the time of doing business, which translates to higher revenue.”

Expantiating more on the launched green channel, Mr. Adeniyi added that:
“This is a bigger port and you know, we always have an issues of a staking areas on a bigger ports, and after some days you want to do examination and you can’t do it because you don’t even know where the containers are packed.
But this particular intervention helps them to move the containers from the vessels into a dedicated place where the containers can be examined.
And between the time a container is moved from the vessels and the time it is moved to this place (the green channel), it can be tracked. You can see it online, you can monitor it and things like that. So, it becomes very very convinced that this is an idea that must be given time to work. So, while not give it time,” the workaholic Customs boss pleaded.

Giving more details on why it was named ‘green channel’, the CGC jokingly added, “because it was green. And you can seen it here. Also that because we have removed every encumbrances.”

He however noted again that “it is coming through a dedicated intervention, and have not been tampered with and it is moving through a dedicated corridor, goes to a staking area, that’s green.
He added: “If the customs stops it along the line or if there is intervention or may be it is stopped by another government agency, the movement is ceized, then it is no longer green.”

On the number of containers that can be position in a day, he answered that “it depends on the containers that are brought by the vessels, and meanwhile the customs is not in the position to determine how many containers. All depending on the containers that are presented for customs to assess,” he said.

Knowing more about the green channel, the management of Lagos Free Zone on their own said that green channel is a Nigeria customs service -approved, dedicated logistics corridor designed to fas-track the movement of cargoes between Lekki Deep Seaport and Lagos Free Zone.

On what the green channel means for the Legos free zone companies, the management through the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Adesuwa Ladpja said:
“The green channel provides Lagos Free Zone -based companies with a decisive operational advantage by enabling cargo to move seamlessly from vessel to factory or warehouse through a secure customs-controlled route.”

Listing the key benefits, the company (Lagos Free Zone) said:
Faster time to market. Meaning that, cargo clearance timelines would be reduced from 24-48 hours to a matter of hours with a final reconciliation completed at the free zone; lower logistics and demurage cost. This they say will reduce port dwell time and minimal cargo handling; predictable supply chain.

“By this, they mean that there will be improved production planning and reduced inventory holding requirements optimizes deployed working capital ;
Enhanced competitiveness. This, they say, is ideal for manufacturers and exporters saving time- sensitive regional and global markets; regulatory certainty. This, they Lagos Free Zone management noted, provides full customs oversight without disrupting business operations.
Giving a clearer view of how the it works, the LFZ noted equally that once cargo arrives at Lekki Deep Seaport, it is discharged directly into the green channel under customs supervision. Cargo. Cargo is transported via a dedicated corridor to Lagos Free Zone, where inspection, verification, and reconciliation are completed,” they said.

On the strategic advantages for Nigeria as a country and West Africa as a continent, the Management of LFZ said:
“The Green channel reinforces Lagos Free Zone’s position as Nigeria’s leading destination for manufacturing, logistics, and export -oriented industries. It supports Nigeria’s trade facilitation objectives, enhances regional competitiveness, and strengthens the country’s role as a West Africa trade and production hub,” the LFZ management noted.

CGC, ADENIYI COMMISSIONS LAGOS FREE ZONE GREEN CHANNEL ***Assures That It Is For Trade Facilitation By Ambrose Obioma Okehi (News Emperor) The Comptroller -General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR has on Wednesday commissioned the Lagos Free Zone Green Channel at the Lagos Free Zone Itoke Village, Ibeju, Lekki, Lagos.
